Cytogenetics of Musa Textilis Nee x Musa Balbisiana Colla Hybrids in the Philippines
Thesis Abstract:
Karyotype analysis using chromosome banding (C- and H-banding) methods was done on two Musa textilis Nee varieties, namely: Sogmad Pula and CES III, Musa balbisiana Colla (Pacol), Pacol x CES III, and the two putative Pacol x Abaca hybrids, namely: Canton and Minay.
Results revealed that somatic mosaicism caused by aneuploidy in the chromosome types identified was exhibited in all the Musa forms studied. Heteromorphism in chromosome lengths and amounts of heterochromatin among chromosomes of a complement demonstrated the heterozygous condition of all forms. The hybrid revealed only the chromosome types found in Musa textilis and M. balbisiana except for Minay, which showed rare chromosome types suspected to have arisen by structural rearrangements of chromosomes.
The direct hybrid origin of these hybrids were also discussed.
