Survey of Philippine Aphid Parasitoids and Laboratory Studies of Diaeretus sp. 1 (Hymenoptera: Aphididae) on Aphis Glycines Matsumura (Homoptera: Aphididae)
Thesis Abstract:
The survey covered provinces of Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao and was conducted in the summer of 1984 and in December 1984-February 1986. Laboratory studies were undertaken at the Entomology Laboratory of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) in July 1985-February 1986.
Mummies or parasitized aphids were collected from 14 aphid species found throughout the Philippines. Eight parasitoid species were identified, namely: Aphelinus sp. (Aphelinidae), Diaeretus sp. 1, Diaeretus sp. 2, Aphidius sp. (Aphidiidae), Encyrtid la (unknown genus), Syrphophagus sp. 1, Syrphophagus sp. 2 (Encyrtidae), and Tetrastichus sp. (Eulophidae).
Findings showed that aphids often attacked their hosts in association with aphelinids and encryrtids. However, a sngle species could regulate the aphid population in various instances.
The percentage of field parasitization of each parasitoid served as a basis for determining the potential species of parasitoid for laboratory studies. The efficient regulatory activitiy and the abundance of Diaeretus sp. 1 encouraged the thorough study of the parasitoid's biology on Aphis glycines. The duration and measurement of the developmental stages, life cycle, longevity, and sex ration were noted. The searching, mating and oviposition behavior, host performance, and efficiency of the mated female in the laboratory were likewise observed.
