The Mosaic Diseases of Maize in the Philippines

(Vietnam), Master of Science (University of the Philippines Los Baños)

Thesis Abstract:

The mosaic type of corn disease in the Philippines was found to be caused by two distinct plant viruses. One was a flexible rod-like virus transmitted by five species of aphids in a nonpersistent manner, while the other was a bullet- or bacilliform-shaped virus transmitted by a planthopper.

Physical properties of the aphid-borne virus, its host range, symtomatology and morphology resemble those of the Maize Dwarf Mosaic Virus (MDMV) reported in the United States. Serological tests revealed that the Philippine virus is strain A of MDMV. On the other hand, the planthopper-borne virus is similar to, if not identical with, the Maize Mosaic Virus (MMV), based on morphology, vector type and symtomatology.

Hosts of both viruses were limited mostly to grasses belonging to family Poaceae and one species of Musaceae. Common hosts of the two viruses were Rottboellia exaltata L. and Euchlaena Mexicana Schrad.

Of the five aphid vectors of MDMV, Schizaphis graminum (Rond), Longuinguis sacchari (Zehntner) and Myzus persicae (Sulzer) were established for the first time in the Philippines.
