Storage of Paddy Rice in Bamboo-cement Silo

Bamboo-cement silos as an alternative storage for paddy rice at the farm household level was studied and compared to metal Silos and bamboo baskets. The cylindrical storage bins, three units for each type, all had 140 centimeters inside diameter and were 125 centimeters high.

There were substantial changes in the moisture content of paddy rice during its six-month storage. The averages of grain moisture content in the bamboo-cement silo, metal silo, and bamboo basket were 14.39 percent, 13.31 percent, and 13.95 percent with standard deviations of 0.62, 1.08, and 0.44, respectively. The temperature in the metal silo fluctuated most and least in the bamboo basket.

Paddy rice stored in the bamboo-cement had milling yield higher than that stored in the metal silo and bamboo basket. The bamboo-cement and metal silos had paddy rice with less on insect density than that in the bamboo basket. However, the infestation percentage of paddy rice stored in the three storage facilities were not statistically different.

The percentage of seed germination in the bamboo-cement silo,  metal silo, and bamboo basket were 64.70 percent 75.48 percent, and 81.41 percent, respectively. The bamboo-cement and metal silos had higher storage costs per kilogram of paddy rice due to the initial investments.

Based on the higher milling yield and less insect infestation, the storage of paddy rice in bamboo-cement silo can be an alternative method in farm houehold level, storage of paddy rice, especially for consumption purposes. In terms of seeds viability, the metal and bamboo silos were better storage facilities than the bamboo-cement silo but they had lower milling yields.
