An Economic Analysis of Sustainability Status of Marine Capture Fisheries Resources, North Coast of Java

(Indonesia), Master of Science in Resource Economics (Bogor Agricultural University)

Abstract:

Recently, the concept of development has changed from the old paradigm with economic growth as an indicator to sustainable development as a new paradigm with broader aspects considered. This has influenced the changing of assessment policies of fisheries resources sustainability status. The assessment of fisheries resources status is a multidisciplinary approach and multilevel work. The previous assessment technique was focused on biological indicators as well as ecological aspect. However, this technique cannot answer the question of sustainability status of resources. Regarding the limiting capability of the conventional assessment technique, more dimensions (i.e., ecological, technological, economic, social, and ethical) are taken into account nowadays. A multivariate analysis has been applied in terms of solving this type of problem, with multidimensional scaling as a tool technique. Rapfish is a specific multidimensional scaling base technique developed as a new assessment technique for valuing the fisheries resources sustainability status holistically. This new tool has been successfully able to represent the Food and Agricultural Organization’s (FAO) indicators of resource sustainability. Based on its ability, this new technique will be applied for valuing the sustainability resources status of North Coast of Java fisheries, one of the most important areas for Indonesian fisheries. The results of this appraisal are very important in terms of managing the resources in an appropriate approach that support the development and empowerment of fishermen with less impacts to resource degradation. It was suggested that further analysis for valuing of fisheries resource degradation should be done.
