Histopathological Characterization of Lung Slaughter Swine in Selected Abattoirs in Laguna, Philippines and It’s Relation to Serological Profiling for Porcine Pleuropneumonia (PPP), Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) and Enzootic Pneum
Thesis Abstract:
Porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC) is one of the most important health concerns in swine production since consumers demand for high quality pork from healthy animals. The study was conducted to characterize and compare the microscopic lesions and serological profile of pneumonic lungs of swine in selected slaughterhouses in Laguna, Philippines. Blood and lung samples were collected from the municipalities of Santa Cruz, San Pablo (A), Los Baños, and Cabuyao (AA). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test was the detected antibody for the diseases and the histopathological changes in the lung tissues were collected. The results showed detection of the presence of porcine pleuropneumonia (PPP), enzootic pneumonia Mycoplasma hyopneumonia (Mhy), and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRS). In Los Baños, Sta. Cruz, and San Pablo, the most prevalent disease was Mhy at 26.1 percent, 13 percent, and 17.4 percent, respectively. While in Cabuyao, the diseases found were PRRS and Mhy, both at 8.7 percent. Based on the histopathology, it was found that the most occurring types of lesions were haemorrhage (haemor), congestion (conge), and lymphoid hyperplasia of BALT (lh_balt). However, the histopathological findings were found to be not significantly associated with the disease present in the sample swine.
