(Philippines), Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Education (University of the Philippines Los Baños)

Dissertation Abstract:

This study focused on mainstreaming climate change adaptation in the BS Agriculture curriculum of selected Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Centers of Excellence in Agriculture. A total of 103 faculty members from Benguet State University (BSU), University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), Visayas State University (VSU), and Central Mindanao University (CMU) participated in the study. Three factors (external, personal, and institutional) were analyzed in relation to integration of climate change adaptation in the BSA curriculum. Personal (age, length of service, and civil status) as well as organizational factors were found to be associated with the extent of integrating climate change adaptation concepts. Institutions whose faculty demonstrates favorable attitude and innovative behaviors on climate change adaptation manifest a higher level of integration.

ANOVA showed significant differences in respondents’ age, academic rank, and length of service. At the individual level, results of correlation showed significant difference between number of trainings attended and attitude toward integration of climate change adaptation. Results of correlation also showed significant difference in organizational mission, organizational innovation, and adequacy of organization’s resources vis-à-vis the extent of climate change adaptation in the BSA curriculum. Conclusions were drawn from the study point to the importance of institutional
support, general policy, and guidelines mandating the SUC-CA to develop organization framework and strategies on CCA integration in the BSA curriculum.
