SE Asian program on food, nutrition begins Oct 6

LOS BAÑOS, Laguna -The first Summer School Program on Food and Nutrition Security in Southeast Asia will begin here tomorrow.

The four-week special course will be offered by the Southast Asan Ministers of Education Organization-Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEAMEO SEARCA) hosted by the Philippine government in the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB).

The summer school program on food and nutrition is intended for qualified graduate and postgraduate students who are nationals of SEAMEO member countries.

Nationals of seven SEAMEO countries have signed in to attend the course: Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Phlippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. The four other SEAMEO countries are Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Singapore, and Timor-Leste..

For its maiden offering, the course will focus on the various concepts related to inclusive and sustainable agriculture and rural development (ISARD) toward food and nutrition security in the context of Southeast Asia, which is SEARCA’s priority thrust for its Tenth Five-year Plan.

“To ensure that the course captures the Southeast Asian context of sustainable development, various experts and subject matter specialists will serve as resource persons and lectures for the month-long enhancement course,” SEARCA stated.

The summer course cost of $1,400 per student covers food and accommodation, course fee, field trips, and airport transfers. SEARCA has offered limited slots for financial support.
