  • 12 September 2014

SEARCA has just released two monographs from the Philippine component of the International Development Research Center (IDRC)-funded project entitled Building Capacity to Adapt to Climate Change in Southeast Asia, which SEARCA implemented in cooperation with the Economy and Environment Program for Southeast Asia (EEPSEA).

Climate Change Vulnerability Mapping of Selected Municipalities in Laguna, PhilippinesThe first monograph Climate Change Vulnerability Mapping of Selected Municipalities in Laguna, Philippines analyzed the vulnerabilities (in terms of gender, geographic location, ethnicity, and socio-cultural, demographic, and political economic variables) of 12 municipalities in Laguna and presented these as maps that show the relative vulnerability of the communities based on their exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity to climate change-related risks and hazards. The monograph was written by Engr. Vicente G. Ballaran Jr., Ms. Maria Emilinda T. Mendoza, Ms. Jaime Kim Bayani-Arias, and Ms. Rowena A. Dorado from the University of the Philippines Los Baños, and Dr. Bessie M. Burgos of SEARCA’s Research and Development Department.

Faces of Vulnerability: Gender, Climate Change, and DisasterThe second monograph Faces of Vulnerability: Gender, Climate Change, and Disaster highlights the social and gender dimension of the study. It documented how men and women are differently affected by climate change and other related hazards and discussed the important role of women in climate change adaptation. The monograph was written by Dr. Maria Emilinda T. Mendoza, Assistant Professor at the Department of Social Development Services, College of Human Ecology, UPLB. She was the Philippine country project leader and the leader for the social component, including gender.

The monographs are available as free copies or downloadable as PDF and can be accessed here.
