SEARCA, IPSARD conduct the Vietnam 1st National Consultative Meeting under the GIZ-ASEAN Climate Change Program

HANOI, Vietnam – The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), and the Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development (IPSARD) convened the 1st National Consultative Meeting on 11 March 2014 at the IPSARD Office in Hanoi, Vietnam for the ASEAN Network on Promoting Climate Resilience of Rice and Other Crops. IPSARD is the premiere agricultural research and development institution under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), and serves as the focal agency for the ASEAN Technical Working Group on Agricultural Research and Development (ATWGARD), represented by Mr. Nguyen Kim Chien, Specialist, Technology and Environment Department.

The national consultative meeting is one of the key activities of the project funded by the ASEAN-German Programme on Response to Climate Change (GAP-CC)/GIZ to support the regional initiatives of the ATWGARD. It brought together climate change and agricultural research think tanks from the Plant Protection Department of Thai Nguyen Province; Department of Crop Protection; National Center for Agriculture and Fisheries Extension; National Maize Research Institute; Hanoi University of Agriculture; SNV-Netherlands Development Organization (in Nge An Province); Monsanto Vietnam; GIZ/GAP-CC; the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS); and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI).

Lansigan, SEARCA Regional Agricultural Value Chain/Climate Resilience Expert cum Team Leader (seated).Dr. Tran Cong Thang, SEARCA National Team Leader for Vietnam, provided the participants an overview of the project and facilitated the workshop that aims to (1) identify areas where there are climate change vulnerable elements in the supply of rice and maize in Laos, (2) identify good practice case studies for climate adaptation of rice and maize, and (3) learn from case studies on various best practices on climate change adaptation in the rice and maize sectors in Vietnam shared by participants to stimulate and spread meaningful adaptation responses across the ASEAN region.
