The travel grant award was given due to the significance of the topic on OneHealth/EcoHealth and its huge potentials in providing a holistic understanding of the environmental challenges besetting the livestock sector of Southeast Asia. For years, SEARCA has been interested in providing policy analyses on the socio-economic and environmental factors critical to ensuring sustainable livestock-based farm management. Additionally, the growing concerns on anti-microbial resistance in the aquaculture and terrestrial food animal production further strengthened the interest in utilizing multi- and interdisciplinary approaches and tools to systematically contain potentially large-scale epizootics, prevent spillover of zoonotic bacteria into the food chain, and ultimately to ensure sustainable livestock production. Likewise, findings of recent studies point to the growing significant public health implications of anti-microbial resistance (AMR) in Southeast Asia, which warrant immediate attention.
In partnership with CIRAD, SEARCA envisions to take an active leadership on operationalizing OneHealth/EcoHealth approaches in Southeast Asia particularly applied in the livestock sector. A set of intervention modalities are currently being planned by the Centre and to be implemented by the last quarter of 2018 (capacity building/workshops) and in 2019 (researches).
