DA-SWCCO, SEARCA and UPLBFI hold AMIA Project 1 Summative Event

QUEZON CITY, Philippines – The Department of Agriculture – System Wide Climate Change Office (DA-SWCCO), the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), and the University of the Philippines Los Baños Foundation, Inc. (UPLBFI), convened the Summative Event under the DA-funded project titled, Strengthening Implementation of Adaptation and Mitigation Initiative in Agriculture (AMIA Project 1), on 9-10 June 2016 at Torre Venezia Suites and Sequoia Hotel in Quezon City.

Dr. Lope Santos III delivers his opening remarks during the AMIA 1 Summative Event, 9 June 2016, Torre Venezia Suites, Quezon CityThe AMIA Project 1 Consultants presented the key findings and recommendations in their respective components, namely: (i) Key AF Policies; (ii) Integrated Climate Change Geographic Information System (ICCGIS); (iii) Disaster Risks Reduction and Management in Agriculture; (iv) Landscape Planning in AF Development; (v) Managerial and Technical Capacity Building; and (vi) Project Management, Program Development Plan, and Institutional Assessment. DA-SWCCO invited Regional Field Officers and Directors to critique their presentations.

Ms. Alicia Ilaga, DA-SWCCO Director, and Dr. Lope Santos III, SEARCA Program Specialist for Project Development and Technical Services (PDTS), delivered the welcoming remarks. They both emphasized the need to integrate and harmonize the results of the different project components to ensure the relevance and effectiveness of their outputs.

The following were presented before the representatives of DA staff bureaus and regional field offices:

  • GIS Status Report by Mr. Aljon Barril, Senior GIS Specialist of the Integrated Climate Change Geographic Information System (ICCGIS)
  • Landscape Planning Component Report by Dr. Eliseo Ponce, Component Leader and Dr. Pastor Garcia, Region 6 Consultant
  • Regulations (Irrigation and Farm to Market Road) by Engr. Nathaniel Diola, Civil Engineer and Materials Specialist
  • Research and Development Sub-component Report by Dr. Cecilio Arboleda, Livestock Policy Specialist and Agricultural Policy and Research Specialist
  • Information, Communication, and Extension (ICE) by Dr. Rowena Baconguis, Agricultural Extension Specialist
  • Disaster Policy Specialist of the Disaster Risks Reduction and Management (DRRM) Component Report by Prof. Abraham Manalo, Disaster Policy Specialist
  • Drones for Field Monitoring by Dr. Rogel Mari Sese, Drone Specialist
  • Capacity Building Results by Dr. Daylinda Banzon-Cabanilla, Training Specialist/Module Writer
  • Renewable Energy and Water Conservation in Agriculture Report by Dr. Severino Capitan, Bio-Gas Specialist under Special Studies

Dr. Steve Godilano also presented indicative outputs that can be generated from the GIS database compiled by AMIA GIS Laboratory.

Ms. Rosario Bantayan, SEARCA Program Specialist, served as the facilitator and moderator for Day 1, while Dr. Baconguis served as the facilitator and moderator for Day 2.
